The present paper provides an analysis of how to interpret the Sumerian epic Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta based on a complete Chinese translation with annotations in-length accomplished by the same author. I will lay emphasis on (1) a new interpretation of the text of the epic; (2) analysis of the protagonists, certain locales and events based on the new interpretation of the text of the epic; (3) an evaluation of the contention among different schools over the Sumerian epic literature which has been going on since decades. This paper makes use of the most recent results of scholarly research on the subject and offers many new interpretations on controversial issues.
